World Chocolate Day may have just passed, but we think it’s always a good time to celebrate where great chocolate begins. 🍫🌱

A look back at Yohanes’ visit to one of our cacao partners, Ghaura Estate in Sumba Island, Indonesia. A fun coincidence? Our Yohanes met another Yohanes, a local cacao farmer.

2️⃣ It all starts here. These ripe cacao pods are ready to be harvested. Every chocolate bar begins as fruit growing directly from the trunk and branches of the cacao tree. 🌳

3️⃣Fresh cacao beans. Once harvested, the beans are removed from the pods and prepared for fermentation, one of the most important steps in developing chocolate’s flavor.

4️⃣ Natural process. Fermentation is where the magic begins. Careful attention during this stage helps shape the flavors that eventually end up in every chocolate bar.

5️⃣ Every bar has a beginning. It all starts here, with the farmers and partners whose care and dedication make every Raphio chocolate bar possible. 🌱➡️🫘➡️🍫

Chocolate starts long before the wrapper.

At origin, cacao samples are cut open and examined to help evaluate quality and fermentation. These little details can tell a much bigger story about a harvest.

The way cacao is grown, harvested, and fermented can have a lasting impact on the flavors that eventually make their way into your chocolate bar.

One of the many steps that happens before cacao ever reaches our factory. 🤎
