On Thursday, 39-year-old Michael Nicholas Covey pleaded guilty to two counts of the s*xual exploitation of children and one count of receipt of child po*******hy. His sentencing is set for February 22, 2023. He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and a maximum penalty of 80 years in prison.

Monthly monitoring of state or federal s*x offender registries is a vital part of keeping our children safe. I started checking the registry on a monthly basis about ten years ago, when I became more involved with patient care, specifically with our pediatric patients. Many thought the monthly checks were unnecessary and made me 'paranoid' but our pediatric patients should feel safe when they come to their doctors office. During those searches, I found a number of adults who were attempting to become patients at a pediatricians office and to be fair, we have transitioned into Family Medicine but under no circumstance would I knowingly take on a registered SO.

I urge you to start a monthly monitoring of your states SO registry site or use the federal registry.
