Spirit Up North

I received many photos of today's beautiful halo over the area. Amazingly, this was created by the clouds from Hurricane Ian more than 500 miles away. A halo indicates the presence of a thin veil of cirrus clouds high in the sky. Sunlight contains all the colors of the rainbow. When that light passes through hexagonal ice crystals in high thin cirrus clouds, each color is refracted at a slightly different angle. Because of the unique properties of ice crystals, the colors spread out and create a perfect circle around the sun. Nice shot Robert Staron.
