AARP Frederick Chapter 636

Kathy Siggins, a member of AARP Chapter 636, has served as an advocate to help create USPS Stamp for Alzheimer research. The Semi-postal stamp has been a passion project for Kathy since 1997. Kathy worked with NIH to get formal approval and support of the stamp, then collected over 84,000 petition signatures to show USPS there was national public support for its creation.

The Semi-postal Authorization Act granted USPS the authority to offer one stamp for a two year period, for the Alzheimer’s stamp, with a print run of 500 million. However, the stamp was pulled off the market in 2019.

This meant Kathy and stamp advocates had to mount another campaign to have it reinstated for sale, or else the remaining stock would be destroyed.

The support of her elected officials and changes to the law cleared the way for the stamps reinstatement, and it was offered for sale again in October 2020.

To date 10 million Alzheimer’s Semi-postal Stamps have been sold, raising more than 1.3 million for Alzheimer’s and Dementia research at the National Institutes of Health.

Lady Liberty joined us today at our July AARP Chapter 636.
