June is here, and with it comes Pride Month, a reminder of something that sits at the core of what I do, even when it is not on a calendar.

My work has always been about the underdogs. The ones who get overlooked, misunderstood, mislabeled, or simply not given the space they deserve to exist loudly and lovingly as they are. And while the LGBTQIA+ community is often unfairly treated as “different,” the truth is that it is society’s lens that is distorted, not the people themselves.

Around here, I want Barktivist to be a small corner of the internet and the world where “different” is not a warning label but a celebration. A space built on safety, love, and the belief that every story deserves to be seen, honored, and told with heart.

Every rescue pet comes with a story. Some are messy. Some heartbreaking. Some hilarious. But every single one deserves a soft place to land and humans who see them as worthy from day one.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the beautiful mommas. Whether your kids have toe beans or fingers, we see you, we love you, and you’re doing great. 💕

And all the love to the moms watching over us from beyond the rainbow bridge.

Many years ago, during monarch migration season, Wyatt & I were out on a walk when a butterfly landed right on the tip of his nose. Instead of snapping at it or getting startled, he just froze... a little confused but completely gentle, letting this tiny creature rest for a moment before flying away again.

I only managed to grab a few blurry photos, but it became one of those moments I'll never forget. It reminded me that softness exists in places the world often refuses to see it.

That moment inspired this portrait of Wyatt - a nod to the gentleness bully breeds are capable of & the quiet magic that is loving a dog.  

Loving a dog, especially one the world misunderstands, changes you.

It teaches patience.
Protection.
Advocacy.
Selflessness.
Unconditional love.

You learn to speak for someone who cannot speak for themselves. You reshape your routines, your priorities, even your heart around keeping them safe, happy, & understood.

And to me, that is such a deeply motherly kind of love.

So today, I want to celebrate the dog moms ... especially the ones loving the misunderstood, the overlooked, and the underdogs. 🦋
