Many people are confused about the rapture because they have been taught to expect a secret coming of Christ that removes believers quietly before a future tribulation, yet when we examine Scripture carefully—especially through the lens of the Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary we discover that this idea is not supported by biblical truth. In the Bible, the so-called “rapture” is simply the moment described in 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 when Christ returns and the righteous are “caught up” to meet Him in the air, and this event is inseparably connected to the one, visible, glorious Second Coming of Jesus. Christ does not come secretly, because His coming is compared to lightning flashing from east to west, something sudden, bright, and seen by all, and Revelation 1:7 plainly declares that every eye will see Him. According to the SDA understanding, the Second Coming is a single, climactic event marked by the voice of the archangel, the trumpet of God, and the resurrection of the dead in Christ, followed immediately by the transformation of the living righteous; such language leaves no room for silence or secrecy. At that same coming, the wicked are not left alive to continue life on earth but are destroyed by the brightness of Christ’s appearing, as Scripture teaches in passages like 2 Thessalonians 1:7–9, resulting in a desolated earth. The righteous, meanwhile, are taken by Christ to heaven, fulfilling His promise in John 14:1–3, and this begins the millennium during which the saints reign with Christ while the earth remains empty and Satan is bound because there is no one left to deceive. Therefore, the biblical teaching upheld by the SDA Bible Commentary is not a secret escape of the church but a public victory of Christ, where salvation is completed openly before the universe, and the true focus is not on avoiding trouble but on living in readiness and faithfulness, because the blessed hope of the believer is not a hidden rapture but the glorious appearing of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
