Debi Riley For Fort Walton Beach City Council

Dear Voter:

For the past few years, I have had many people urging me to run again for Fort Walton Beach City Council. In early 2024, after prayerful consideration and numerous family discussions, I decided to champion this challenge.

I have been actively involved in city and county issues for the past 20+ years. As you may know, my experience as a social worker has provided me an opportunity to serve and help strengthen families in the local community. I have also worked with mothers, children, and families on educational and socio-economic issues such as early childhood education, mentoring, STEM learning, educational enrichment, job training, and workforce development.

I sought to bring economic development to many of the local communities, in Okaloosa County. I have worked to successfully obtain various designations including empowerment zone, Brownfield, Opportunity Zone and Front Porch status to many of these communities. This has given these communities access to much-needed funding and other resources, and enabled community businesses to gain much-needed tax benefits. My goal is to continue to build off these successes, such as the Census Tract 219 appropriation, to further develop local communities.

Another area of interest to me is growth management. Our city has grown tremendously over the past few decades. Being a native of Fort Walton Beach, I have seen this first-hand. Many of the issues we now face as it relates to property rights, wetlands, environmental issues, homestead and tax issues, budget shortfalls, etc., stem from the way that we have mis-managed growth in the area. This is certainly an area where we have room for improvement and one that I plan to be deeply involved in rectifying. It is my goal to form city, state, and private business partnerships to provide affordable workforce housing as we continue to grow and strengthen our city.

I am proud of the accomplishments and the work I have done within our community. I am running for office because I believe I can be successful in implementing these same successes within the city of Fort Walton Beach. I am here today asking you for your vote for Fort Walton Beach City Council on March 11, 2025.
