The new high-resolution GOES 16 is producing incredibly detailed imagery. In the image below, various features such as urban areas, agricultural areas and very small-scale meteorological features such as convergent lines are easily seen.
Convergent lines can provide the trigger to initiate thunderstorms and were previously very difficult to resolve on satellite imagery.
Derecho - a name for a powerful wind event associated with long-tracked severe thunderstorms. These storms can track across multiple states, and winds along the strongest gust fronts can cause damage similar to that from tornadoes.
And although the tornado threat has decreased from its annual springtime high, derecho season is in full swing...
At MetLoop, we're watching for these and other storms, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
