In 1975, the Fort Chaffee military base served as the largest of four primary U.S. processing and resettlement centers for Southeast Asian refugees fleeing the Fall of Saigon. Under the federal initiative "Operation New Life," the Fort Chaffee became a monumental transition hub and is often called the "Ellis Island" for Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, and Hmong Americans.
