Consistency-and finally Consistency. This is the bow that ties it all together. Each of the preceeding must exist but for overall success, they must exist consistently.

In order to develop repeatable appropriate behaviors, we need to send the message of what our expectations are each and every time.

If we only expect our dog to stop jumping on people and furniture when guests are over, yet allow it every other day of the week we are setting them up to fail.

In order to have a dog that doesn't bolt out of the door when suddenly opened, we have to require he sit and wait at the threshold each and everytime he is waiting to go out or come in. Otherwise the environment and situation holds more value and control over him then any training we've done to that point.

Make no mistake, consistency is hard. Hard on us. It's not an expectation of the dog but rather a requirement of us. We should strive for consistency in all we do and don't do as it relates to our dog.

Follow these 6 canons of dog training to improve and solidify your relationship with your dog....

Patience - patience is necessary to treat your dog fairly and build the relationship you desire.

Patience is understanding that your dog is NOT choosing to do things out of spite or deceit, but rather looking for something that benefits him. Before getting upset, yelling or chasing her through the house, ask yourself "what is the benefit she's seeking"? Is it attention? A game of tag? Dogs seek the good in life and avoid the bad. Simple, uncomplicated.

Patience also applies when teaching new skills. Remember when you talk to your dog they hear the teacher from the Peanuts cartoon. "Mwaaah mwaahh mwaaah mwaaa". Be fair and patient, while bridging the communication gap that exists in intra-species communication. They'll come to recognize certain words just as you understand barking at the door means he needs to go out to potty.

Take a breath and recognize his effort. Patience goes a long way in building that lasting bond we all seek....
