At the South Trail Fire & Rescue 2026 Awards Ceremony, Dr. Keith Lafferty and members of the Training Division proudly presented Phoenix Awards to firefighters who played a critical role in the successful resuscitation of patients suffering cardiac arrest.
The Phoenix Award recognizes members of the emergency response team who contribute to achieving Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC) and, ultimately, a patient's survival to hospital discharge following cardiac arrest. Named after the legendary phoenix that rises from the ashes, the award symbolizes renewed life and the extraordinary efforts of those who make that outcome possible.
These awards represent the highest level of teamwork, training, and dedication to patient care. Every successful resuscitation is the result of a coordinated effort involving dispatchers, community CPR, firefighters, EMS, emergency department staff, and countless others working together toward a common goal.
We are proud to recognize the firefighters whose actions helped give patients a second chance at life and the opportunity to return home to their families.

Congratulations to Firefighter Bryce Dearstyne on being named South Trail Fire & Rescue's 2026 Firefighter of the Year.

Nominated by his officers and selected by all three Battalion Chiefs, Bryce was recognized for his outstanding dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence both on and off the emergency scene. His professionalism and service embody the highest standards of South Trail Fire & Rescue.

Bryce received this honor during our 2026 Awards Ceremony, surrounded by fellow firefighters, friends, and family—including his wife, Tara, and their twin babies, who were there to celebrate this special achievement.
