Although I only attend home births now, this can be unassisted or in the presence of a midwife.

Most home birth midwives are very respectful of your wishes and allow some form of flexibility in their practices.

However, ALL licensed midwives still have an allegiance to the state that certified them to practice medicine. At the end of the day, there are certain guidelines they must follow in order to not put their ability to practice in jeopardy.

Some midwives are transparent about this and others aren’t.

A doula holds no medical licenses and only has an alliance to the families they serve. That means we want you to understand ALL of your choices along with the costs and benefits of each.

In medicine, you have the right to choose life-saving procedures or not. You have the right to decide what tests you take or don’t. You have the right to informed consent. Just as your provider reserves the right to withhold or cease care if your choices go against their legally-bound protocols.

The point is, we all have the right to choice. And we all get to experience the byproduct of those choices.
