Officials say a lightning strike hit four people who were in the water off Fort Myers Beach on killing a 51-year-old man.

The fire chief said the man was struck directly by the bolt. A bystander deployed an automated external defibrillator and began CPR before first responders arrived, but the efforts to save him were unsuccessful.

The three other victims were members of his family and were reported in stable condition. The lightning strike occurred on Friday and came as a reminder beachgoers that Florida leads the nation in lightning deaths.
