We have taken a few days to find the words to honor Mark Crimmins. His passing is a profound loss for his family and friends, and it is also deeply personal to many within the City organization. Mark’s daughter-in-law, Jen, serves as Fort Dodge’s Ward 1 Councilwoman, and his son-in-law, Ryan, has served as City Attorney in Mark’s absence during recent months.

We know no public tribute can fully capture what Mark meant to those who knew and loved him, but we could not let his passing go unmarked without honoring the lasting impact he made on the City he served so faithfully.

Mark’s impact on Fort Dodge cannot be summed up by a single title, decision or accomplishment. It is reflected in the many years he devoted to serving this community and the people whose lives and work he touched along the way.

For many years, Mark served the City of Fort Dodge with integrity, professionalism and a deep commitment to public service. He began as associate city attorney, working alongside longtime City Attorney Maury Breen. Following Maury’s passing in 2011, Mark stepped into the role of City Attorney, faithfully serving the City Council while continuing his private law practice.

Throughout his years of service, Mark provided steady guidance through challenges, important decisions and moments that helped shape our community. His knowledge of the law was invaluable, but those who worked with him will also remember his thoughtful counsel, quick wit and the genuine joy he brought to the job.

Mark understood that serving a community was about more than legal opinions, contracts and Council decisions. It was about people. He cared deeply about Fort Dodge, and that care was evident in the wisdom, patience and good humor he brought to every conversation and challenge.

On behalf of the Mayor, City Council and City staff, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Mark’s wife, Nancy; his children, Jake (Jen) Crimmins, Mandy (Ryan) Kehm, Megan (Matthew) Johnson and Claire Crimmins; his grandchildren; and all who knew and loved him. We pray they find comfort in their faith, in one another and in the many memories of a life so well lived.

Council meetings will not be the same without you, Mark. We will miss your steady presence, thoughtful guidance, quick wit and the joy you brought to the work. May God bring comfort and peace to Nancy, your family and all who loved you. Rest well, and thank you for a life of service so generously given.
