I deleted the message.

Then I emptied my trash folder.

My hands were shaking.

How could anyone know?

The belt was hidden.

No one had seen it.

At least...

that's what I believed.

I walked downtown.

Every face looked different.

The old man reading a newspaper.

The teenager sitting on a bench.

The woman walking her dog.

Were they looking at me...

or was fear beginning to change the way I saw people?

At a gas station...

the cashier smiled.

"Long day?"

"You could say that."

She handed me my change.

Then stopped.

She stared at me.

Not my face.

My eyes.

"You okay?"

"I'm fine."

She hesitated.

"You don't look fine."

I laughed.

Walked outside.

Halfway across the parking lot...

I stopped.

I could have sworn...

someone whispered...

"She almost knew."

I turned.

Nothing.

Nobody.

Just cars.

Wind.

Silence.

I stood there for a long time.

Trying to convince myself...

I hadn't heard anything at all.
