The Baldwin County Commission has approved a $60,000 partnership with the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Mobile Bay National Estuary Program to create advanced flood modeling tools for the Styx River Watershed. The project will help officials better understand how the river responds during storms, identify flood-prone areas and make better decisions as growth continues in the region.

Using hydrologic models and AGWA software developed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, county planners will be able to evaluate how new developments, land-use changes, detention ponds and stormwater systems could impact flooding before projects are approved. The tools will also assist emergency managers in preparing for severe weather events and responding to flood threats.

As rapid growth continues in the area, officials say the project will provide science-based data to help protect homes, improve flood resilience and support responsible development.

"We want to give resource managers, elected officials and decision makers as much information as they can have to make appropriate decisions on emergency management preparation, approvals and changes in land use based on the growth that we're seeing," Jason Kudulis, director of the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, said.

The new Waterway Village Pedestrian Bridge under construction to cross the Intracoastal Waterway will now have decorative lighting, according to a project budget amendment.

Gulf Shores City Council approved a request by the city at a meeting Monday, June 22, to add the lighting package. The proposal comes from Harrison Construction Co., the contract company tasked with the construction of the pedestrian bridge, for $408,940, for the design, furnishing and material and equipment.

The bridge lighting will consist of 50 light fixtures along the bridge and towers; 12 on each of the towers and 13 fixtures on each side of the bridge. The lights will have remote-access to control the system, which will be pre-programmed with up to 30 color combinations for circumstances such as holidays or events.

🏊‍♂️ 🏗️ Construction on a new indoor Aquatics Center in Foley is expected to begin once final construction plans are completed, marking a major expansion of year-round recreational opportunities for swimmers and local swim programs.

The facility will be built at Max Griffin Park on West Roosevelt Avenue near the city’s outdoor swimming pool, which has served Foley residents since 1953. The existing pool will remain open during construction.

Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the new center will allow residents, children and swim teams to use the facility throughout the year instead of being limited by seasonal operations and weather conditions. He noted that some local swim teams have had to train elsewhere when conditions prevented use of the city’s outdoor pool.

“We’re going from a Memorial Day to the start of school facility to a year-round center that more meets the needs of our citizens,” Hellmich said. “It’s time we had this in Foley.”

City officials hope to seek construction bids later this year. Once work begins, the project is expected to take about 18 months to complete.
