The "Mile-High" Threat
Embers are burning pieces of airborne wood or vegetation. They can be carried more than a mile by the wind, landing in gutters, under decks, or in vents—starting "spot fires" far from the main blaze.
The Home Ignition Zone (HIZ)
Your home’s survival depends on the Home Ignition Zone—the condition of your house and everything within 200 feet of its foundation.
The Reality Check: While clearing a full 200-foot radius isn't always possible (especially in heavily wooded areas or tight neighborhoods), a 50-foot buffer is your critical line of defense. If you live where the wildland meets your backyard, focusing on those first 50 feet is the most vital step you can take.

NFPA - Preparing homes for wildfire There are methods for homeowners to prepare their homes to withstand ember attacks and minimize the likelihood of flames or surface fire touching the home.

As temperatures drop overnight, today’s melting snow and runoff will refreeze into Black Ice. It is nearly invisible and creates extremely hazardous conditions, especially on bridges, overpasses, and the many shaded curves throughout Henderson County.
Our message to you is simple:
Don't trust "wet" pavement: If it looks damp and the temp is below freezing, treat it as solid ice.
Adjust your schedule: Give yourself an extra 20 minutes, or wait for the sun to come up if possible.
The Golden Rule: It is much better to arrive at your destination a little late than to not make it there at all.
