Purdue University continues to showcase the power of innovation through groundbreaking work in 3D printing. In makerspaces, students are doing more than creating projects—they’re exploring career pathways and developing real-world skills that connect directly to future opportunities across countless industries. Purdue’s leadership serves as a powerful example of how hands-on learning can inspire the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and industry leaders.
When a severe storm with near 100 mph winds struck Saint Louis, Michigan, a Quarter Horse named Sassy was hit by a fallen tree limb, fracturing multiple bones in her skull, face, sinuses and left eye socket.
After emergency stabilization at Michigan State University, she was referred to Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine & Veterinary Hospital's Brunner Equine Hospital, where a standing CT revealed damage far more extensive than initial x-rays showed.
The team's solution? A custom 3D-printed protective helmet — built with help from the Purdue School of Aeronautics and Astronautics — to shield her fractured eye socket and give the bones time to heal.

We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of one of our Maker Managers, Vic Makximenko. He had an incredible impact on the students he worked with each day and will leave a lasting impression on the Lawrence County Boys and Girls Club.
