In the 5th and last paragraphs of the Fire Chief’s report it shows how the current trustees voted to approve wasteful spending of your taxpayer dollars. $2,347.80 approved for airline tickets and $3,000.00 in salary compensation. All this to tour the factory where a new Liberty Twp. fire truck was going to be made. Coincidentally, our neighboring Allen Twp. Fire Dept. made the same trip in regard to a future truck, but………they drove there.

FACTS: Liberty Twp. Fire Dept. has seen a tremendous amount of turnover since the current Fire Chief was appointed in January 2024. When 30% of your firefighters either resign or go inactive that seems like a problem. That is definitely a lot of valuable experience walking out the door. How would you respond to a situation like this? Well, the Liberty Twp. Trustees gave the Fire Chief a 20% pay raise. Based on Twp. minutes posted on the website the salary went up from $8500/yr. to $10,200/yr. Seems like a problem especially since the last Fire Chief had a salary around $5,000/yr.

FACTS: Liberty Twp. has a problem with firefighter retention. This is a common problem among many volunteer fire departments. Of the 32 total firefighters on the Liberty Twp. Fire Department at the beginning of 2021 only 12 remain. From Feb. 2024 to Feb. 2025 alone 8 left the department and 9 new started. This ongoing issue isn’t going away and also costs the township a lot of money in constantly training and equipping new firefighters. This is another reason why Liberty Twp. shouldn’t be trying to get us to approve a NEW (Replacement) levy where they can add onto the existing fire department. Fix the problem you have before creating a bigger need problem.
