Today, while checking on a prairie turnip along our driveway, I noticed a small dark object stuck to one of the leaves. And just like that I was introduced to the fact that Minnesota prairies are inhabited by land snails! I had no idea. We have about ninety species, most of which are smaller than a grain of rice!

This last spring was the first season that I attempted to grow great blue lobelia after finally locating a local seed source. Germination wasn’t great. I only grew maybe sixteen plants. The fall crop does not appear to be similarly afflicted! Look at all those little guys!
