In Michigan, companion animals are considered “property” under the law. As Governor, I’m getting that changed to “living property” so we can treat them as such once rescued. If you get convicted of an animal abuse charge, you’re on the Pet Abuse Registry and not allowed to own a pet for a specific length of time! ProtectMIPet!
