We recently held our Annual Awards Ceremony and wanted to share some of the significant achievements and heroic actions of our personnel with you. Over the next few weeks we’ll spotlight an award recipient and tell you a little about what they did to receive an award…..
Today we share with you a Life-Saving Award presented to Officer Colleen Borders.
On July 11, 2022, at about 3:30pm a call came in to 911 regarding a child that had drowned at the swimming pool at Westhampton Apartments, 333 S. 320th Street. Officer Borders was next door at the Kaiser Permanente on an unrelated task and heard the call aired over the radio. She immediately responded to the swimming pool and found an unresponsive six-year-old male lying on the ground next to the pool. The child had already been removed from the pool by residents. Officer Borders immediately began CPR on the child. During the CPR the child began spitting up water and vomited. Officer Borders used her fingers to remove the vomit and spit from the child’s mouth and clear his airway.
Officer Paul came on scene after Officer Borders and had the following to say: “Multiple medical and fire personnel mentioned to me that Officer Borders was quick, efficient, and very effective in her life saving measures. Without her skill and timely arrival, this young boy may not have survived, I was told he ingested a significant amount of water. Multiple people on scene called her a ‘hero’ and complimented her abilities. Officer Borders remained calm and composed during our entire time on scene and represented our department in the best way possible and saved the life of a young boy.”
The apartment complex manager wrote an email to the Police Department expressing her gratitude for Officer Borders’ actions. She wrote “We had an incident here at our pool yesterday and I wanted to know if we could nominate the first responding officer and the 2 residents who gave aid and CPR for a “Heroism Award”? They saved a little boy’s life yesterday. I do not know the name of the officer, but I remember her from National Night Out last year, and she was incredible yesterday!”
The child was transported to Harborview Medical Center and survived the drowning. Officer Borders quick actions on this incident likely saved the child’s life. For her actions, Officer Borders was presented with a Life-Saving Award.
