Practicum supervision is tough.

For the student, this is the time of "put the pedal to the metal", where book learning becomes real. Often, they focus so much on the practical skills that they struggle to connect singular skills to behavior intervention as a science, as a craft. So to speak, they see the grain of sand but can't see the ocean is sits in. Then there's the pressure of professionalism, leadership, confidence, interpersonal engagement, ethics... it's a lot!

But the supervisor faces similar challenges! They may have the skill, but have never conceptualized the "how" of teaching it to someone else. The pressure of organizing appropriate learning opportunities, tracking progress objectively, and modeling an entries repertoire is overwhelming. They are often trying to balance this with providing top tier intervention to a full time caseload, too. In this context, supervision is a chore- and not a fun one, either.

Sometimes an external provider is necessary and appropriate. Someone with experience in creating those rich learning opportunities, with a means to direct skill development effectively while keeping their eye on the student's singular skills and their entire skills set as a whole. Maybe it's someone who finds true joy and engagement on crafting the future of the field, who has all the time to answer the questions of curious minds and integrate the knowledge shared into the relevant circles of understanding.
