Completed in 2017, this kitchen is proof that thoughtful material choices go a long way. Warm wood, clean surfaces, and a simple palette that still feels just as fresh today.

Design trends come and go—but materials that are honest, durable, and well-crafted will always hold up.

Last week we had the opportunity to tour the Salk Institute in San Diego designed by Louis Kahn. Built in the 1960’s to provide a collaborative, non-profit environment for scientists to explore the foundations of life. Today it is a renowned research center focused on pioneering discoveries in molecular biology to address critical health and environmental issues.

The open, stark plaza reflects sky light, turning the entire complex into a “sun-catcher” that highlights the interplay between the elements of water, concrete, and sky. Good thing San Diego has a lot of sun! It’s a beautiful building.

Fun facts:
Jonas Salk discovered the first safe and effective vaccine for polio.

Louis Kahn used volcanic ash in the concrete mix, similar to the Roman Pantheon, giving the walls a warm, pinkish glow.
