NDSU students bioengineer environmentally safe textile dye The students used advanced laboratory techniques to enable a protein from bacteria to produce a dye that binds with cotton, useful for coloring textiles in an environmentally friendly process.

Hi friends and family,

This summer a group of students and I are working on a 2022 iGEM competition. iGEM, which stands for International Genetically Engineered Machine, was founded by MIT and is a prestigious worldwide event in the cutting-edge field of biotechnology. NDSU’s team was the first iGEM team in the upper Midwest and the only team in North Dakota! In order to successfully represent our region, the team needs to develop a project that solves a current problem using synthetic biology.

Our student-led team is working to develop natural dyes for textiles using genetically modified bacteria. As you know many bacteria already produce natural pigments. Our goal this season is to optimize the production and structure of these pigments for use as an alternative to synthetic dyes which are harder to produce and can have very harsh byproducts. The team-based research will be performed over the summer semester, with the project culminating in a final presentation in Paris, France this October.

We are seeking primarily monetary donations to help the team conduct a thorough research project and to subsidize travel expenses for attending the conference in October. If you do not wish to support us in this way, please reach out if you believe you can support us in some other way, all help is greatly appreciated! All donors would receive recognition on a designated slide in our presentation at the competition as well as a shoutout on our social medias.
