We’ve been selected to be a part of the Giant Community Bag program this summer! Did you know that you can spot roughly 400 bird species in Virginia over the course of a year? In this brief series, we’re going to present the best spots throughout the state to fill your bird bingo card starting this summer!

For the first post-we’d be remiss if we didn’t start with the statewide Virginia Bird and Wildlife Trails that consist of 65 loop trails across Virginia’s mountains, coast and Piedmont regions. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation maintains maps of each loop with descriptions of the activities available at each destination. You can search for locations near you or plan a trip across the state! Some local favorites here in Northern Virginia include Burke Lake Park, Lake Accotink, and Royal Lake Park. From nesting Bald Eagles to Osprey to Great Blue Herons, these parks are teeming with life!
