Black and African American History Month is celebrated annually in February. The month’s purpose is to celebrate and honor the achievements, contributions, and central roles of Black and African Americans in U.S. history. The month grew out of “Negro History Week,” founded by historian, Carter G. Woodson, who chose the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.

“Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history”- Carter G. Woodson
