✨ DID YOU KNOW? ✨
Known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," Opal Lee dedicated decades to making Juneteenth a national holiday. At age 89, she began walking from Texas to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness about the importance of recognizing June 19, 1865—the day the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned they were free.
Her tireless advocacy helped lead to Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday in 2021.
As we celebrate Juneteenth, we honor the legacy of Opal Lee and all those who worked to ensure this important chapter of American history is remembered.
