Recently, one of our Urban Designers, Bryant Baugus joined the 2026 City Building Exchange trip across the Southeast with The CityBuilding Partnership and Nathan Norris!

Here are Bryant’s reflections on this experience:

“After having some time to reflect on the trip it really struck me just how important these opportunities can be. It can become easy to lose track of the impact of the projects we work on when we are just drawing them behind a desk. However, the opportunity to get out and see projects with other insightful and interesting people helps remind me why we do this work in the first place, to provide a service to the people who will live there.

The conversations were thought provoking and inspiring, and the people were incredible! You all inspired me so much.”

We’re excited to officially welcome Ben Hancock to the CPLA team in our Rural Studio!

After recently graduating from the Mississippi State University MLA program, Ben joins us full-time following two Summer internships with CPLA and serving as the 2024 CPLA Fellow.

Adding to an already impressive list of accomplishments, Ben was recently named a 2026 Olmsted Scholar by the Landscape Architecture Foundation — one of the highest honors awarded to landscape architecture students nationwide.

We’re proud to have Ben as part of the CPLA family and look forward to all he will accomplish with our team!

With more and more home buyers looking to buy “within walking distance of a coffee shop” what features create these conditions, and how does urbanism either incentivize or disincentivize these options?

The first step is people first development; designers, developers, and stakeholders working to create places that they themselves would love to be.

The term “charrette” translated in French means “little cart.” In early design schools, students would work feverishly to finalize a project and roll up their work to put in the Professor’s “cart” as it passed by their table to meet the deadline. This work was often targeted, and creative as they had little time to overthink solutions.

In English, the term Charrette has been borrowed to describe “an intensive work session.” The compressed timelines, communication, and engagement often produces work at another level.

These intensive work sessions are an integral part of our planning process because they establish realtime interactions with clients, stakeholders, and the design team to solidify an initial framework and vision for a project.

Earth Day reminds us why we do what we do: designing spaces where people and nature meet.

From greenways that connect communities to blueways that honor our water systems and urban parks, we create places where the natural world becomes part of daily life.

Every trail planned, every native planting specified, every wetland restored isn't just an aesthetic choice. It's creating healthier ecosystems, more resilient communities, and a world where outdoor spaces are accessible to everyone.

Today, we celebrate the work of shaping land responsibly. Of thinking long-term. Of creating spaces that give back more than they take.

Here's to designing with the earth, not just on it.

Yes, we like to dream up big ideas, and craft a vision through sketches, plans and models…. But our passion revolves around seeing those ideas become a reality through construction.

The end goal is to create places for people to enjoy. That is what drives us.

Design exists to serve the people who will ultimately experience it. Good design doesn't draw attention to itself, it quietly enhances everyday life - making tasks easier and moments more pleasant. When users can move through a space without frustration, but with joy, the design has succeeded.

At its core, design is an act of empathy: understanding how people think, move, and feel, and then responding with solutions that honor their experience. Usability and enjoyment are not separate goals - they are two sides of the same commitment to making the world a little more livable, one design at a time.

Mims Park - a beloved neighborhood park that has served generations of ballplayers in Mobile, AL, has had several upgrades to fields, and now a brand new restroom / concessions building. CPLA is honored to be the lead consultant on these projects.

The new building brings enhanced amenities, providing a shaded gathering space for families and visitors. The design prioritizes accessibility and community connection, with thoughtfully planned circulation that integrates seamless with the existing park infrastructure.

Thanks go out to leadership and staff, our design team - , Smith Mechanical, and Dell Electrical engineers, as well as Harris Contracting Services for the build.

"There are only two seasons: winter and baseball,"
Bill Veeck

From the Major Leagues to Little Leagues - people from all over the country will be pouring into baseball parks this Spring to cheer on their favorite teams.

We are grateful to have played a part in shaping those experiences for so many through thoughtful planning and design of stadium sites, sportsplexes, and neighborhood parks.

Happy Opening Day! Let’s Play Ball!
