DO NOT BURN REST OF THE WEEK INCLUDING TODAY!!!!
A heightened fire danger is expected across eastern Iowa and western Illinois on Wednesday. While temperatures may not seem excessively hot, the combination of dry air, gusty winds, and dormant vegetation will create conditions that allow fires to start easily and spread rapidly.
The fire danger is elevated due to several key factors. Low humidity levels will allow grasses and vegetation to dry out quickly, making fuels much easier to ignite. Gusty winds developing through the day will increase the risk of fire spread, allowing even small sparks to grow quickly and become difficult to control. In addition, dry ground conditions and dormant winter vegetation provide ideal fuel sources. This is common during the late winter season, when vegetation has not yet greened up and remains highly flammable.
This means that any outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Fires can escape control quickly, even if started intentionally in burn piles. Sparks from equipment, vehicles, or improperly discarded ci******es could also ignite fires under these conditions.
Safety precautions are strongly recommended. Avoid outdoor burning. Properly dispose of ci******es and smoking materials. Do not park vehicles on dry grass, as heat from exhaust systems can ignite vegetation. If you see a fire, report it immediately so it can be contained before spreading.
Fire danger will be highest from late morning through late afternoon, when winds increase and humidity levels drop further.
MIWS StormTeam Weather will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates as needed. Stay safe.
