Talking about horses, live!
Why Wednesday ~ My horse seems very uncomfortable when I try to do the Head Down Technique. Can you share any tips on doing this technique with a poll-sensitive horse?
Answer: The Head Down Technique helps horses release tension through the poll and improve softness and mobility in this area. As the horse relaxes, you can gently work the tissues behind the poll and create subtle movement through the poll and atlas joint with a soft, rhythmic motion.
The goal is never to pull or hold the head down. Instead, offer the invitation and allow the horse to find a position that feels comfortable.
A few helpful tips:
• Ask softly by just putting your hand over the area, and wait. By doing this, you are inviting the horse to lower their head, allowing it to choose the level that feels comfortable.
• Follow the horse if they lift the head. If the head comes up, simply stay connected with light contact and offer the invitation again. Avoid trying to prevent the movement.
• Allow them to stay in their comfort zone. When the horse settles into a lower position, give them time there. Asking for more can sometimes create resistance instead of relaxation.
• Keep your touch soft. Use the pads of your fingers with a gentle, flowing motion behind the poll to encourage release and mobility.
• Experiment with a slight bend. Bringing the head just a little off center can often help the horse soften and let go of tension more easily.
• Pay attention to your horse's responses. Watch for signs that your horse is processing or needs a pause. Working with the horse, rather than on the horse, is key.
Safety Tip: When your horse’s head is lowered, position your own head to the side rather than directly underneath. This helps keep you safe if they suddenly lift their head in response to a sound or movement.

Have you ever wondered if a horse can still carry tension from something that happened years ago?
This article from Jim Masterson explains how horses can hold onto stress and protective patterns in the body long after an incident has passed, and how gentle, responsive bodywork can help them release it.
It’s a fascinating reminder of how much horses communicate through subtle body language, and how important it is to listen.
