FAILURE FRIDAY

Here’s a clear example of the danger posed by included/codominate stems. A large silver maple on the property had multiple included trunks and extensive internal decay along those union zones. Externally I saw no major cavities, missing bark, or canopy decline—only the inclusions. The homeowner dismissed my risk assessment, saying, “It’s been like that for years—why would it fail now?” Well three days later, during a minor storm, a large codominant stem suddenly failed and narrowly missed the house. The wood just fractured and the branch dropped fast—no tearing. Be especially vigilant with silver maples!

The power of falling trees

A mature basswood (approximately 100–150 years old) recently fell and completely destroyed a sugar maple, splitting its fibers apart — a reminder of how much force falling trees can generate.

If you have trees that could pose a similar risk, TRAQ ISA arborists can assess and manage tree hazards on your property. With 23 years of experience in tree evaluation and care, we provide professional risk identification and mitigation.

APPLE TREE STRUCTURING

Late winter is the best time to prune apple trees. In this orchard, the homeowner wanted the trees low to easily pick the apples amd her new apples trained. We carefully structured them to meet this goal by removing the tall branches and creating strong, horizontal branches that can support the weight of the apples and allow for easier harvesting. The younger trees were trained to become well-structured mature trees.

Contact us for an evaluation or more information. All kinds of young trees can be structured to ensure a long lifespan and look their best!
