Let’s talk about the Beef Tallow taking over your feed lately... 🔍🧪
I’ve had three virtual clients ask me about this in the last 48 hours, so you know I HAVE to head into the Lab and look at the actual science behind it!
Here is my raw opinion as a cosmetic formulator: I really hate it for most skincare applications! SORRY! Lol But let’s talk about the elephant—or rather, the cow—in the treatment room right now: beef tallow. I know it’s being marketed as this ancestral, "one-size-fits-all" miracle for your skin, but after over a decade as an esthetician and formulator, I’m here to tell you why it’s often a recipe for disaster on your face. While a very small group of people with extremely dry, completely depleted skin can get along fine with it, tallow is simply way too heavy-duty and occlusive for most facial applications.
The big marketing line is always that tallow "mimics human sebum," but chemically, that's just not true. Human sebum relies on a delicate balance of fluid lipids, wax esters, and essential fatty acids, while tallow is incredibly high in oleic acid and lacks the fluidizing properties your skin actually needs. When you slather a heavy animal fat onto a barrier that is already impaired, sensitive, or dealing with something like periorificial dermatitis, you aren't healing it, you're suffocating it. It traps heat, bacteria, and sweat, throws off your skin's natural pH, and creates a "sticky" environment that leads to endless congestion, texture, and chronic irritation.
True barrier repair isn't about slapping a heavy-duty band-aid over your face; it's about supporting your skin’s natural chemistry with sophisticated, balanced botanical lipids that breathe with your skin. If you’ve tried tallow and your skin went absolutely horrid, please know your skin isn't "purging", it's begging for air and the right kind of hydration. Let’s leave the tallow for cooking and treat our delicate facial barriers with the targeted, plant-based nourishment they actually recognize.
