Best Friend Rodent Rescue
03/07/2025
In the PNW, we've been dealing with a large amount of rats being dumped outside. Our sister rescues down in Oregon are getting hit hard with case after case as well. Many of you remember the tragic story of Scabbers, who fought a hard, brave fight, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and neglect. Despite all the horrors in this community, sometimes we need to focus on some happy "tails" to remind ourselves of why we do the work we do.
Batman and Mr. Hutt from the Roseburg rescue, a collaboration with Rat Way Sanctuary, recently passed, but not without living an amazing 9 and 11 months of fulfilling, happy lives which is beyond anything we optimistically hoped for with the condition they arrived in. Batman even made it through over 5 months with Melanoma - something that continues to baffle us all. Our foster describes them as extremely happy, sweet boys who loved attention and kisses - a sweetness that one might not expect from rats kept outside in filthy cages subjected to the elements in central Oregon through winter. Both boys came alone, having never lived with another rat before, and after being neutered, went through the most relaxed introductions with other boys that our experienced foster has seen.
We also want to highlight a more recent story that we hope comes with a long and happy ending. We were contacted by a family on the Kitsap Peninsula who found a rat wandering around the apartment complex they had just moved into. They brought him in, fed him and spent the next few weeks trying to find an animal shelter that would take him. Here at BFRR we do our best to accommodate emergency single rat cases whenever possible. This beautiful boy who our foster is now calling Lambington just got a clean bill of physical health from one of our wonderful vets down at Seattle Bird and Exotic. We had some health concerns upon intake but it does appear he may just be really traumatized from his time outdoors wandering around trying to survive. Please wish this little guy the best of luck in his healing towards a full emotional recovery. Since moving in with his foster sisters several days ago, we are noticing some life return to his eyes.
