I'm so pleased that the WIDC event on May 18, 2024 will include a clip from Loretta Smith's "Where Did You Get That Woman," a delightful documentary look at the life of Joan Williams, a 70-year-old African American woman, who earns a small income from a job as a night-time toilet attendant at a Gold Coast hotel. Williams' observations and wit about the “beautiful people” she encounters make this short film an outstanding social commentary.

As a part of Chicago Filmmakers’ ongoing retrospective of our 50 year history, we look back at the legacy of the Women in the Director’s Chair (WIDC) film festival with co-founder Gaylon Emerzian who will screen clips and short films from WIDC alums. Emerzian will be joined by Susan Kerns, co-founder of the Chicago Feminist Film Festival, to discuss the impact of WIDC and the current realities for female identifying filmmakers.
