Before he became one of America's most famous federal agents and one of The Untouchables, Eliot Ness (Chicago '25) was an SAE.

Known for taking on Al Capone and fighting organized crime during Prohibition, Ness built a legacy of integrity, courage, and doing what was right, qualities that continue to define what it means to be a True Gentleman.

According to SAE legend, one of the Fraternity's most cherished traditions began when Ness unknowingly shot fellow SAE brother Paddy Murphy, who was working for Al Capone. After learning Murphy was an SAE, Ness honored him with a traditional Irish funeral, inspiring what would become Paddy Murphy Week.

Ness also left his mark on Cleveland, where he served as the city's Safety Director and helped modernize its police and fire departments.

We'll be heading back to the city Ness helped shape for SAE's 171st Anniversary Convention, June 24–27, 2027.

Ness' story is a reminder that integrity, honor, and brotherhood have always been at the heart of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
