Inspirational moments in Hip Hop with J5MD -
the year was 1998, summer had just ended and fall was creeping in. My cousin, a few friends and I went to a Hip Hop battle night at a all ages place called the channing murray, on the campus of the u of i in Champaigne/Urbana just south of Chicago Illinois. It was an Emceein, breakin, and DJin battle, I think the host was Matt Harsh. So the Emcees start at it and these guys are tearing each other apart, a few Emcees filter through and then this cat named Uncle Butters from chi got on the mic. The cat he was battling went first and destroyed him, I mean really tore him down, then uncle butters get on, steps to the front of the stage and just start spitting some of the most amazing, beautiful, positive, complex bars I have ever heard, it wasn't even about the other Emcee, it was on some other level type style and he takes the round. He then slayed 5 or six cat just like that and took the night. It dawned on me that he wasn't there to battle Emcees but to battle the negative. This moment was super inspirational to me, as I was up until then writing rhymes to break others down, that all changed that night. The rest of the night was hazy but all I really remember was CrazyLegs and Uncle Butters.
