Democratize UO

Full text of statement:
“On February 8th, 2022 the Daily Emerald first reported on the decision by the ASUO Senate and ASUO President Isaiah Boyd to transfer the budget and authority of the EMU out of the ASUO’s Student Incidental Fee budget to the University of Oregon administration. This major development came out of nowhere and was not reported on until the decision was already made. Largely, this was due to the decision being a backroom deal between President Boyd and VP of Student Life Kevin Marbury. Not only did this decision come with zero transparency or public discussion, but it also came as a surprise to even the members of the ASUO Senate who were not properly briefed on the move to remove the EMU from the I-Fee budget until the day the ASUO budget needed to be finalized. With little information and time for discussion, the ASUO Senate passed the I-fee budget without inclusion of the EMU funding.
Attempting to hand the EMU over to the admin is a striking and shocking undermining of student autonomy on this campus and must be strongly condemned. The EMU has historically been a space that has been for the students and by the students. Students have a unique autonomy over this space that we have nowhere else on the campus. It houses some of our most valuable and vulnerable programs that do not always align with the wants or needs of the Administration. Additionally, this decision would have lowered the ASUO Incident Fee budget from $17 million to $9 million – a further deterioration of student power. “
