Throughout its history, h**p has made an impact and has been both praised and persecuted. In most cases it is revered as a powerful tool with many benefits, though there have been times that some have chosen fear over progress and have turned their backs on this ally.

Like many herbs, h**p was used by all types of people in the past, including those considered to be witches (most likely herbal medicine practitioners and midwives). Because of it’s association with witchcraft, the Christian church outlawed h**p, ironically mirroring modern day prohibition.

In 1231, Pope Gregory IX initiated the Holy Inquisition, its aim to root out and destroy the heresies of the previous two centuries. H**p, being regarded as sorcerous, was outlawed as heretical. Those who used it, whether for medical purposes or divination, were branded as witches who, in turn, were considered heretics.
