Seeing this play put over and over again is heartbreaking.

The Path of a parent of a struggling reader:

Q: I am worried my first grader is struggling to read, can you help?
School: Just wait, it will “click” all kids learn at different times.

Q: I am worried my third grader is failing further behind, can you help?
School: Are you reading to him at home?

Q: I am not seeing any progress with my fifth grader, can we discuss additional services?
School: Pulling him out of his classes will make him feel bad and/or put him further behind.

Q: Can I ask what program you are using with my child and it’s evidence base?
School: We are educators. Why are you questioning our decisions?

Q: I’d like an evidence based, structured literacy program used with my high schooler. Can you do that?
School: We are seeing a lot of progress with the programs we are using.

Q: Can I see the progress?
School: You son is amazing, he tries so hard. He’s one of my favorites.

Q: Can I have a new evaluation done, I’m concerned about her lack of progress?
School: If you make us test, we may have to pull all services.

Q: My child is going into high school and he still can’t read grade level material or write a sentence, how are you going to help?
School: We will show him how to use speech to text and not penalize him for spelling or grammar or really anything. We will also read his tests and scribe for him.

Q: Will you please f**king teach my kid to read and write?
School: Why are you so angry? Why do you hate teachers? By the way, we are “piloting” some things for next year that may benefit a few kids… but not yours. No need to thanks us.

Q: How is she going to get a job when she can’t fill out an application?
School: She is going to look beautiful in her graduation gown. Congrats! You must be so proud, they really do grow up fast.

If you have walked in the shoes of a parent begging for reading services, you will have seen us shamed, gaslit and bullied by our public school. You will also have watched us wipe scores of tears or calm the rage of a child who is watching as his peers leave him behind. You don’t get to criticize our “tone” while ignoring the pleas for help for our children.
