On our feast day, Trinity Sunday this week, the Rev. Carolyn Richardson began her sermon with a blessing: “May you be blessed by the triune God, in the name of the God who creates life, in the name of the savior who loves life, and in the name of the spirit who is the fire of life. Amen." Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, these and others, are various names for the Trinity. For centuries, theologians have argued about the complexities of the Trinity, and yet in so many ways, the Trinity is the cornerstone of our belief. The Trinity has been explained well in the Nicene Creed, and the prayer turned song, St. Patrick’s Breastplate. St. Patrick understood the Trinity, not as a complex theological concept, but as an explanation of the ways God appears to us in our lives.
We see the Trinity in several ways every day. We see God the Father in creation, the creatures, and the universe, in the beauty of a sunset or a mountain summit view. We see Jesus the savior in our ability to forgive others, and in our love and compassion for friends, strangers, and everyone we meet. Finally, we see the Holy Spirit in wisdom when we slow down, meditate, and pray, as the quiet voice that guides us to discernment and knowing where God is calling us.
Throughout our lives, we are continuously reminded of God’s presence in our lives and love for us. The Trinity is not boring, confusing, or complex. Instead, it is the all-encompassing presence of God in our lives and the means through which he attempts to reach us, wherever we are.
