As part of an Aug. 4 ballot, Delta County voters will decide on a new countywide millage to fund Delta Area Transit Authority services, replacing the existing patchwork of township millages. If approved, every part of Delta County would share one transit rate.
The State of Michigan and the federal government collect money for transit through things like vehicle registration fees. But there's a catch! To get our share of that money here in Delta County, the county has to have a certain level of local transit funding in place first. Right now, Delta County doesn't meet that requirement, so that state and federal money goes to other communities instead.
If authorized, the millage would provide the local funding required to keep those state and federal dollars here in Delta County. In its first year, it is projected to bring in about $1.1 million, with roughly half coming from state and federal funding.
