Today we began the construction for our bottle house project. This bottle house, together with the pulley walls we constructed will all be donated to the Early Learning Center’s new playground for their children. By the end of today, we have completed the frames of the bottle house, and the bottles will be attached at a later date. A big shoutout to Triangle Fraternity and their willingness to collaborate with us for this project.

Cold frames are mini-green houses that extend the growing period of plants during wintertime. The box is placed above a patch of soil, and as sunlight passes through the windows, the cold wind is blocked out by the frame. This project was done last semester in corporation with Greener Behrend, an environmental conservation club on campus. The building of the cold frames took place at the maintenance workshop on campus, with the help of the Penn State Behrend maintenance staff.

Today we worked on our first project this semester on 1601 Prospect Avenue. The project was a housing renovation project in cooperation with the Community Shelter Services. We worked on the installing dry walls to the ceiling, removing staples on the stairwell, and removing the wallpaper in the second floor bathroom. Most of the work is complete, and we enjoyed sharing our experiences with our Ukrainian supervisor, Viktor. The completed house will be eventually delegated to a homeless family that is in CSS’s program.
