Headed to Leucadia this summer? 🌊 We’ve got so much more to offer than just our beautiful beaches. Check out our hyper local neighborhood guide - featuring our Leucadia, California favorite small businesses and haunts. Eat, drink, browse, wander. However you spend your day after the beach is up to you 😉 Kind people are our kinda people - won’t you support some of our friends? ♥️ I truly love our little beach town so much - small businesses are still out here bringing the funk and the community to Leucadia.

We are doing our best over here to feed the algo 🐊, but sometimes I really just can’t bring myself to get to work and participate in capitalism and instead, I f*ck off to the forest 🌳 SO! Here is a local San Diego County hike bc life balance is sustainable and DAMN we love Mother Earth 🌏.
Also, when done correctly, hiking/trail running is an easily accessible/free activity! When I say GRWM I mean put on shorts, tshirt and sneakers, this is truly a lazy girls dream hobby.

CEDAR FALLS HIKE - CLEVELAND NATIONAL FOREST, SAN DIEGO COUNTY> - permit required, the fee is $6. I went on a Monday and booked my permit en route, no problem (to be fair, this is not the “ideal” time of year for this waterfall hike).

💧 When hiking in the heat, my personal rule is to bring 1.5 liters for myself per hour of hiking (when not in heat or high elevation my rule is 1 liter per hour). I brought 4 liters total because, dog. In total, we drank 3 liters. I also carry a in the forest/backcountry because it doesn’t hurt to be over prepared.

🌞 This trail is exposed. Use sun protection. Provide plenty of breaks in shady spots for doggo.

📞 Tell at least one person where you are hiking when hiking alone, trailhead, intended distance, return time, etc. know your route, understand the elevation and when in doubt, bring a map 🗺️ they are neat.

🐕 If hiking with a dog, provide plenty of water and shady stops. They overheat more quickly :) I don’t hike with my dog mid-day if temperatures will reach much above 80 degrees at any point, ambient temperature above 85 means dirt surfaces can easily reach 100-120 degrees. Place the back of your hand to the ground for 5-10 seconds, if it’s too hot for your hand it’s too hot for paws 🐾

🎵 I don’t hike with music often. I don’t wear earphones when hiking in San Diego County because we have a delightful population of rattlesnakes. You won’t always hear them, but typically they will make themselves known before they become a problem. But if you can’t hear them? Not good for you or the snake. I don’t hike with speakers because it’s rude. I came to nature to hear nature, not your s**tty

A few 🌈 colorful shots 🌈 of the store recently - I took them as a sort of quiet vindication following my son informing his teacher that his mom’s shop sells “lots of tan stuff”. And yes, we’ve got tan stuff. But we’re also really! big! fans! of color. So stop by and see what sort of colorful 🍉 🍊 🦋🐠🌹🌞 things we’re into right now 😉

What else is new? Well, I’ve personally been deep in graduation season, seeking out cozy sweaters for cold May gray nights (while simultaneously enjoying the first haul from our “summer” garden) and planning summer hiking. Jo is enjoying wedding planning and having her dude just around the corner at . Ava is preparing for a big monthlong adventure to Vietnam and Nancy will be back filling in (yay!!). Diana is planning lots of fun workshops for summer (check out our Events page) and Katie will be hanging out at the shop and no doubt simultaneously planning her next climbing trip. Kellie may even show up as a surprise guest! Anywho. Wishing you well in your corner of the world from ours here in Leucadia. Hope to catch you around somewhere colorful this summer. X Heidi

I truly have empathy for idiots. I’ve been one, myself. Most of us have behaved idiotically, from time to time, if we are honest with ourselves. Empathy is wisdom, and it certainly encourages kindness, but it does not necessitate acceptance of unkind and morally corrupt ideals. So, I empathize with the fact that you’ve been propagandized, that our public education system did not teach us truth or even how to discern it. I empathize with the fact that your schools were also underfunded in lieu of the military industrial complex, that your school didn’t have enough money to buy you the books the Rockefellers said wouldn’t make you better thinkers, but would make you better workers 😉 But! I’m not going to accept your idiocy, and I hope you would do the same for me. I lament the fact that at my niece’s high school graduation they stated their school had three goals, the three e’s: enlistment, employment or further education. We happily prepare our children to blindly march off to war, to accept trillions of dollars of propaganda, to pledge allegiance to a government that regularly breaks international law. We allow the system to target historically underprivileged and marginalized community members for recruitment, we reward those who sign them up for this. When they come home - broken, sick and traumatized we leave them on the streets and avert our eyes. I don’t blame the idiots, I blame the system. It’s all connected. We’re all connected. Time to cure the cancer for *all of us*.
