Lighting the way towards a new treatment for blindness 07/08/2026

We're grateful to the University of Adelaide for highlighting the results of ABACUS-1. The Phase 1 publication in Nature Medicine is a meaningful milestone in our mission to restore vision for those living with inherited retinal diseases, made possible by Professor Robert Casson and the Royal Adelaide Hospital team.

Watch as Brian M. Strem, PhD, President & Chief Executive Officer of Kiora Pharmaceuticals, announces a major milestone: the publication of our Phase 1 ABACUS-1 results for KIO-301 in Nature Medicine.

His message highlights the study's achievements: meeting its primary endpoints with no serious adverse events, and showing early signals across functional vision assessments, patient-reported outcomes, and fMRI activity in the visual cortex.

We are deeply grateful to our patients, investigators, and partners, including Théa Open Innovation, who made this milestone possible. We have advanced to our Phase 2 ABACUS-2 clinical trial.

Advancing treatment starts with understanding where the need is greatest. KIO-104 is being developed to target inflammatory pathways associated with many retinal diseases, with the goal of addressing conditions that can significantly impact vision and quality of life. From posterior non-infectious uveitis to diabetic macular edema, the focus is on conditions where new therapeutic options are still needed.

By targeting the underlying drivers of inflammation, Kiora Pharmaceuticals is working to expand what’s possible in treating complex retinal diseases, bringing a more precise approach to eye health.

Just three to four days after treatment, some patients in the ABACUS-1 KIO-301 first-in-man trial were describing powerful, personal moments of visual change, like recognizing their own reflection in a way they hadn’t in years.

These early experiences highlight the meaningful impact that vision restoration could have on everyday life. From small moments at home to renewed confidence, clearer sight can reshape how patients engage with the world around them. At Kiora Pharmaceuticals, we’re focused on advancing therapies designed to restore vision and improve quality of life, as even brief moments of clarity can carry profound meaning.

Understanding retinal disease is an important step toward advancing new treatments.

Inflammatory retinal conditions such as posterior non-infectious uveitis and diabetic macular edema can affect the critical and delicate structure in the retina responsible for processing visual signals and maintaining clear vision. KIO-104 is being developed to selectively inhibit DHODH, a key enzyme involved in immune cell activation, with the goal of addressing inflammatory retinal diseases.

At Kiora Pharmaceuticals, we are focused on advancing therapies designed to target the underlying biology of retinal disease and support long-term vision health.

Advancing new approaches to vision restoration.

KIO-301 is being explored as a potential option for people living with inherited retinal diseases, including conditions that lead to progressive vision loss such as retinitis pigmentosa.

At Kiora Pharmaceuticals, we are committed to developing therapies that address the underlying biology of retinal disease and help expand possibilities for vision restoration.
