Fear and shame have no place in the exam room! Cervical screenings – commonly referred to as PAP smears or HPV tests – are life-saving preventative measures that have shown success in reducing the incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases. Despite this, screening rates continue to decline every year. Research has shown that shame, negative prior experiences, and lack of HPV education are large barriers to receiving care. Thus, HPV awareness day serves as a vital opportunity to reduce stigma, empower women, and rally our neighbors and community leaders to take action.
