This is a ceramic bird bath that may require some explaining. 😃

This bird bath is fed by a rain chain from the house gutters. Inside the bath you can see a drain that feeds a nearby 400+ gallon catch basin for rainwater. As the bird bath fills with rain water, the water flows down the drain and into the cistern. When the cistern is full, the water overflows the bird bath on the low side and flows into the garden. The water in the cistern can to accessed by a hidden valve to irrigate the garden in drier months.

Mason bees are an early pollinator species in the northwest. They are a solitary bee that lays next years eggs in reeds and hollows. The tubes shown here are empty nest tubes waiting for next year's bees to populate the house. You can also buy tubes of bees and fill the house for next spring.
