A lesson in holding space, from an 11-year-old.
My daughter had a friend sleep over. They watched a scary movie and her friend started crying. She was afraid and having a hard time breathing.
My 11-year-old held her. Hugged her. And then calmly taught her how to do a physiological sigh.
Unprompted. Like a tiny therapist in pajamas. š
I give this kid tools constantly and honestly sometimes wonder if sheās just tolerating me. But last night she showed me sheās been listening all along.
Therapist mom win. š„¹
You donāt have to feel the same way someone else feels to show up for them. You just have to be willing to stay in the discomfort with them. Thatās holding space. And it can be taught.

āBloom when you're ready, not when they're ready.ā š± Wise words from my 10 year old. āŗļø
So often, the invisible rule committee tells us what we should do. Time to stop giving them so much power. Your growth isnāt a group project.
Step inside the haunted house⦠where the ghosts arenāt spirits, theyāre your own avoidance, self-deception, and need for control. Shadows lurk, silence stretches, and your therapist quietly, or not so quietly, reminds you of all the truths youāve been dodging. Enter if you dare⦠and maybe learn something about yourself along the way.
