Being intentional is imperative for your relationship with your dog
I can so often get stuck in this is what I want you to do, so do it. I can get very focused on the goal that I have instead of what my dog actually needs. This will make you frustrated and rush the process—thus bad training and can damage your relationship.
I was so focused on getting her nails done that it wasn’t working towards a positive experience. Even though I was using food, it was more rushed and I was ignoring what God was telling me to do here. I was listening to what I had heard every other dog trainer do for nail clippings. Always use food, build a positive association through that.
Once I started listening to what God was saying I saw the food was not benefitting us. She was too interested in the food and that was actually backfiring. She wasn’t going crazy or anything, it was just making it difficult for me to hold her paw and clip the nail. This is because she was already minorly excited over the food.
So I did what God said and ditched the food. Instead I went slow and used my affection as a reward. I also used pressure and release to teach her she has to relax here. And by me going slow and rewarding in a calm way, this taught her to relax in this situation.
She quickly laid like this and this is how I did her nails. Never with the food was she ever this relaxed. Always was waiting to get the reward. Her laying this way was also much easier to see the quick and effectively cut her nails.
So make sure you guys slow down and take the time your dog needs. Be emotionally in tune with them as well. Genuinely connect with your dog and your bond will grow that much more.
