Education has been at the heart of Edmond’s identity since its earliest days! 🏫

As Edmond grew and the territory moved toward statehood in 1907, education became a central focus of the community. Oklahoma Territory opened its first two-year Normal School on November 9, 1891, with Edmond resident Richard D. Thatcher serving as the first president. Deeply committed to the school’s success, Thatcher moved closer to campus so he could remain actively involved, even while tending to his farm.

A local lawyer, A. H. Classen, donated 40 acres of land to support the establishment of the institution. Another key figure, John Mitch, also played an important role in the founding of the Normal School. In less than a decade, Edmond experienced rapid growth. The school expanded its facilities and enrolled far more students than its founders had originally expected.
